Since the inception of the PSP portable gaming system, it seems like individuals have been more taken with the fact that it can play PSP UMD movies, and not just games. It seems like there are many more movies that can be played on these systems than there are games and other PSP stuff. This has also led to the creation of software involving these movies such as PSP Movie Creator and other converter programs.

But by early 2006, sales of PSP UMD movies and other similar products had decreased so much that the big manufacturers were slashing their production, selling the movies at a lower cost and even giving them away. What was the cause of this unexpected drop in sales? The reason is quite obvious really. What's taking place is that folks started downloading their PSP movies from the internet, just like they download other audio and video files. There doesn't seem to be any point to paying money for something that you can get free of charge.

Unfortunately for the makers of PSP UMD movies, this is a situation they probably didn't foresee. Of course it is just like what happened to the producers of music CDs when the internet became filled with plenty of free download sites. There are now so many sites where you can get pirated copies of PSP UMD movies that it has impacted the manufacture of the physical product.

Some manufacturers have produced promotional items such as older videos that were previously available only in obsolete formats such as beta, and offered them at a reduced price. Some companies resorted to creating websites where movies can be viewed by streaming for a small price. However even at a reduced cost, people still preferred to download their movies for free.

There's no shortage of sites on the internet where a movie can be converted to PSP format and downloaded. As well as this online access to free movies, you can also purchase software that will convert your files to UMD format. Undoubtedly this is against the law, but most individuals don't really care. And once they've converted the movie, they upload it to share with others. There are so many alternatives to getting a movie that it almost seems crazy to do so.

It is not easy to come up with a solution to this situation, however any steps to change things would have to involve some sort of law enforcement effort to search out and shut down these sites. No doubt the movie manufacturers would like to be involved in something like this. In addition, a crackdown on those who break the copyright laws needs to be pursued more vigorously. Of course, it's not challenging to think up a solution, but implementing it is another story. If you want to do your bit to keep the PSP UMD movie industry alive, just pay for your movies instead of sharing them.
