In Tiffany's methods the reheated glass was sprayed with vaporized solution of salts of tin or iron. These vapours were absorbed by the molten glass and created layers of colours when the glass was cooled down. With these glass sheets having different colours Tiffany designed lamps in different styles and shapes.
Tiffany's indigenous technique for producing coloured glasses was magical and quite effective. He designed different colours by using different metal vapours. The copper vapour spray resulted in greenish blue to a rich ruby red and the cobalt vapour produced a spectrum of blue shades and if mixed with manganese it gave the black colour.
